NYCC 2012 | Assassin’s Creed III Eyes-On Impressions

The final installment in the Assassin’s Creed trilogy is just two weeks away. We got a special look at the game at New York Comic Con, here’s what we saw!

The demo for Assassin’s Creed III opened up with our new protagonist Connor running through a snowy environment. Right from the bat we were shown tree climbing, a new feature for the Assassin’s Creed games. The climbing ran fluently as Connor hopped from branch to branch. Eventually, he dropped down to the ground to demonstrate his new weapons.

One of the new weapons in Assassin’s Creed III is the bow and arrow. Connor killed a nearby deer with the weapon and then engaged in combat with a pack of wolves. One wolf leaped towards the assassin but missed as his attack was dodged. Connor pulled out his pistols and fired two shots on two of the wolves, killing them immediately. The shooting is much better in III than it was in Revelations due to Double Shot. With Double Shot, Connor fires two shots and it automatically hits two nearby targets. Connor chased down the last wolf and struck him with his tomahawk, another new weapon available in Assassin’s Creed III.

Connor eventually made it to his destination, an American camp. Some of the doctors and chefs were trying to get Connor’s help for side quests but were ignored. Frequently in the game at various places, players will be approached by bystanders looking for help with certain objectives. Connor walked up to a soldier who had an exclamation mark over his head to get information on a Templar named Silas. In the brief cut scene, the soldier is giving Connor a rundown of the raid being planned on the British at the moment but Connor stresses that he doesn’t care about the war, just the Templar.

One of the great things about Assassin’s Creed III is the ability to double wield. After leaving the camp, I was greeted by British soldiers at their own camp and engaged in combat. The player can use their tomahawk to eliminate one weapon and take care of another with a hidden blade. The chain kills definitely run more smoothly than before and it was clear in this demo.

Connor eventually reached the camp and was only tasked with eliminating Silas. Silas is shown in his tower, sipping tea as he watches men, presumably prisoners of war, tortured in the middle of the camp. Instead of getting to the target stealthily, the demonstrated chose a more fast-paced option and shot explosives to create a diversion. As the soldiers looked around confused, Connor ran passed them unnoticed and went up the hill to find his target. Silas was on the move and by that time, the soldiers had already known the assassin was hard at work. Connor sprinted after the target and used his momentum to take out a guard. Still in full speed, he grabbed one of their weapons and stabbed a soldier while running, pulled it out and jumped off of a platform to assassinate his target.

Assassin’s Creed III definitely feels more real in many ways. With the game introducing seasons, combat and movement change depending on what season it is. Connor may be slower walking in snow than he would be on a clear surface. This adds realism when you’re chasing targets up a snowy slope and being outrun. There is a new enemy archetype called the Snitch, who will run away from Connor and tell other soldiers about what you’ve done. I wasn’t shown exactly the gravity of the scenario if the Snitch were to fulfill his goal but it’s definitely not something I’d like to find out.

The visuals in Assassin’s Creed III look amazing thanks to the new engine, AnvilNext, Ubisoft’s in-house engine. The game will be a top-runner for best graphics of the year, hands down. You can get your hands on Assassin’s Creed III when it comes out on PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 30th.
