In our own special way of celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.Day, we’ve thrown together a list of our favorite black video game characters.
5. Sazh – Final Fantasy XIII
Sazh is hands-down my favorite character from the Final Fantasy XIII titles. His primary objective was rescuing his six-year-old son, Dajh, before Dajh became a Cie’th. Unlike his party members, he was more calm, mature and came off as the voice of reason when the others would let their emotions get the best of them. Sazh was extremely kind, selfless and humorous, making him a more likable character than the rest of the playable characers.
Jacob – Mass Effect 2
After Shepard comes back to life at the beginning of Mass Effect 2, the first character players come in contact with is Cerberus Operative Jacob Taylor. Before the events of Mass Effect 2, Jacob was an Alliance Marine but had resigned after a geth attack on Eden Prime. He enlisted with Cerberus to fight the good fight and serve humanity without being held back by the Alliance, although he isn’t his moral standards are above Cerberus’ ruthless methods.
Aveline – Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation
Since its debut in 2007, Assassin’s Creed hasn’t had a female protagonist, let alone a black one. Until Liberation, when Aveline showed up. Aveline de Grandpré is an Assassin of French and African heritage who seeks liberty and freedom for slaves. She sees herself as their protector and their beacon of hope. Throughout Liberation, Aveline will interrogate and eliminate many leaders of slave trading enterprises. Her independence and strong will, despite being very wealthy, earns Aveline a spot on this list.
Roland – Borderlands
Though Roland is a playable character, it isn’t until Borderlands 2 when we get to know the character on a level of which we could actually care about him. In a time where Handsome Jack is ruling Pandora with his iron grip, Roland is the leader of the resistance dedicated to taking down the Hyperion leader. He’s a beacon for hope and a strong leader to the residents of Pandora and victims of Handsome Jack’s ruthlessness.
Lee – The Walking Dead
Whether to put Clementine or Lee in this last spot was a pretty rough decision. Both characters went hand-in-hand with making The Walking Dead one of the best games of 2012. Clementine was a doe-eyed symbol of sweet innocence in a world recently overrun by zombies. Throughout the five installments of Telltale’s episodic series, players will fill the shoes of Lee Everett, whose primary objective is to protect this littler girl. He isn’t her father, brother, uncle or any other sort of relative. He’s just a man who stumbled across her after being attacked by a zombie himself. As Lee, players will have to make numerous decisions, both good and bad, in order to keep Clementine safe. Despite having a troubled past, Lee is a strong-willed man who would do anything to protect one of the last glimpses of hope and innocence that is Clementine.
- Rico – Killzone
- Barret Wallace – Final Fantasy VII

- Sheva – Resident Evil 5
