UPDATE: Sony has confirmed via press release that the PlayStation 4 will come packed with a Blu-Ray drive. All is right in the world.
Original Story: If you watched Sony’s PlayStation 2013 event, there’s no doubt that you were blown away by all of the awesome video game footage and new features we were shown today. But there are two things that were odd about the conference:
- We didn’t see the actual console
- There was no talk of a disc drive.
There were rumors swirling around years ago that the next PlayStation console would drop discs but it may be a reality, which Sony’s strict emphasis with online features tonight seem to hint at. It was also confirmed that the PlayStation 4 would not be backwards compatible, but instead, gamers can stream PSOne, PS2 and PS3 titles via a cloud server.
Kazuo Hirai, CEO of Sony Corporation, stated in 2010 that the next PlayStation console would not drop disc support. We have contacted Sony for more information concerning the issue and will update you when they get back to us.
